About Watanabe's

Kenta Watanabe : Indigo Farmer / Indigo Dyer

Watanabe’s is based in Kamiita-cho in Tokushima Prefecture; the area known for indigo dyeing.

We conduct various activities around Japan to spread the tradition of indigo dyeing, all while bridging connections and forming new friendships. On top of that, we're also want to reach out to those outside of Japan.

Our process of dyeing starts from the very beginning till the very end: cultivating the indigo plant, fermenting it with lye to create indigo dye, and finally dyeing products with it.

We have adopted the traditional practice of indigo dyeing, so the dye in our final product is rich in colour and doesn't wear off easily.

The indigo colour of Watanabe’s is a product of an extensive thought process and human connections from making of compost to fertilize the fields, cultivation of Indigo plants, fermentation of Indigo leaves to making the indigo dye vats.

With traditional craft as the general framework of operation and a bit of help from industrial equipments, we aim to promote a colour that is familiar to all and inseparable from our daily lives.
